Answers to Common Questions
How does this work and what is the process to get started?
Getting started is simple. You can call Sophia, our AI therapist, at 858-XXX-XXXX, or you can access her through the Aluma Health mobile app. You talk to her with natural spoken language.
Sophia will guide you through an initial conversation to understand your goals and introduce you to the process. You can begin structured CBT sessions right away, supported by guided exercises and a digital workbook.
As you progress, Sophia tracks your responses and builds a personalized understanding of the challenges you’d like to address. To ensure clinical quality and safety, a licensed mental health care provider will be introduced to review your progress, provide oversight, and help refine your treatment plan.
You may choose to primarily work with Sophia, while a licensed professional checks in periodically. Alternatively, you can engage in a hybrid approach, combining AI-guided sessions with direct human therapy.
If your care may benefit from medication, a psychiatrist can be introduced to evaluate and prescribe as appropriate.
At all times, you have flexibility:
- Access Sophia 24/7
- Communicate with human providers via text, audio, or video
- Change your therapist or psychiatrist at any time
This model is designed to provide structured, continuous care with both AI support and clinical oversight.
How is my personal and medical information protected?
Aluma Health has architected its systems with privacy and security as a core priority. We follow industry-standard safeguards for protecting Protected Health Information (PHI) and are built to align with HIPAA requirements.
Your personal and health information is:
- Encrypted in transit and at rest
- Stored in a secure, HIPAA-compliant database
- Accessible only to:
- Sophia (our AI system, within controlled session context)
- Your assigned licensed mental health provider, if applicable
Importantly, your data is not stored or retained by the underlying AI model that powers Sophia. Each session is processed securely, and once completed, the connection to the AI model is reset. Your session data is stored only within Aluma Health’s protected systems—not within third-party AI systems.
We also ensure that:
- Access to your information is restricted and monitored
- Your data is used solely to support your care and treatment
- You maintain control over your care, including provider interactions
Our goal is to provide a platform that is both clinically effective and secure, so you can engage in therapy with confidence.
Is virtual therapy with either an AI therapist or a human therapist effective?
Yes. A large body of research shows that teletherapy (virtual therapy with a licensed clinician) can be as effective as in-person care for many conditions, including anxiety and depression.
At Aluma Health, Sophia is designed to deliver structured, evidence-based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)—one of the most well-studied and effective forms of therapy. Because CBT is highly structured and skills-based, it adapts well to digital formats, including guided sessions and workbook exercises.
Sophia also enables something traditional therapy often cannot:
- More frequent engagement (not limited to weekly sessions)
- Between-session support
- Continuous progress tracking
For many individuals, this combination of structured therapy and increased consistency can improve outcomes.
Sophia will be used alongside a licensed mental health provider, who provides clinical oversight and helps guide treatment.
Overall, virtual care—whether delivered by a human clinician, an AI system like Sophia, or a combination of both—can be an effective and flexible way to access high-quality mental health support.
Does insurance cover sessions with either Sophia or a human therapist?
Coverage depends on your specific insurance plan.
Aluma Health is working toward becoming in-network with major insurance providers, with a target timeline of Q2 2027. Until then, coverage for services may vary.
In general:
- Sessions with licensed therapists or psychiatrists are often eligible for insurance coverage, depending on your plan.
- AI-guided sessions with Sophia are typically not yet covered by insurance, as this is an emerging model of care.
If insurance coverage is not available, Sophia is offered at an affordable out-of-pocket rate for a 50-minute session.
Many insurance plans commonly cover:
- Talk therapy with a licensed provider
- Mental health care for co-occurring conditions
- Psychiatric services, including medication management
- Crisis or emergency mental health care
We recommend checking directly with your insurance provider to understand your specific benefits and coverage options.
I think I want to get started with a human therapist or psychologist right up front. Is this possible?
Yes. You can begin care directly with a licensed therapist or psychologist without first working with Sophia.
To get started, you’ll complete a brief set of questions about your symptoms, preferences, and goals. Based on your responses, you’ll be matched with a provider who is licensed in your state and aligned with your needs.
Once matched, you can communicate with your provider through:
- Text
- Audio
- Video sessions
If your care may benefit from medication, a psychiatrist can be introduced to evaluate and prescribe as appropriate.
You also have full flexibility:
- You can switch providers at any time
- You can choose to incorporate Sophia later for structured CBT sessions or between-session support
This approach allows you to start with traditional care while maintaining the option to integrate AI-guided support when it’s helpful.
I like working with Sophia and find her helpful and cost-effective. Can I work only with her, or does a human psychologist need to be involved?
Many patients choose to work primarily with Sophia, and she can provide most of the structured, ongoing CBT support.
That said, to ensure safety and clinical quality, periodic involvement from a licensed therapist or psychologist is required. The human mental health care provider’s role is to make a formal diagnosis, review your progress, validate that your treatment plan is appropriate, and make adjustments when needed.
You have flexibility in how you structure your care:
- Work primarily with Sophia for regular sessions and exercises with occasional check-ins with a licensed provider.
- Transition to more direct human support if your needs change
If cost is a concern, clinician involvement can often be kept minimal while still maintaining appropriate oversight.
This approach is designed to give you the benefits of continuous, affordable support, while ensuring that your care remains safe and effective.
What is the difference between therapy and psychiatry?
Therapy and psychiatry are complementary approaches that often work together as part of a comprehensive mental health treatment plan.
Therapy focuses on helping you understand and change patterns in your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. This can be delivered by a licensed therapist or psychologist—or through structured, AI-guided sessions like those provided by Sophia. Therapy typically includes:
- Identifying and addressing unhelpful thinking patterns
- Learning coping and problem-solving skills
- Working through personal challenges
- Building long-term strategies for mental well-being
Therapists or psychologists do not prescribe medication, but they play a central role in ongoing care and progress.
Psychiatry is a medical specialty focused on diagnosing mental health conditions and managing them with medication when appropriate. Psychiatrists are licensed medical doctors (MDs or DOs) who can:
- Provide clinical evaluations and diagnoses
- Prescribe and monitor medications
- Adjust treatment plans based on symptoms and response
At Aluma Health, you can access both therapy and psychiatric care. If medication may be helpful, a psychiatrist can be introduced for evaluation and ongoing management.
Can the psychiatric provider provide therapy?
No, our psychiatric providers do not provide therapy services.
At Aluma Health, psychiatric providers focus on medication management and assessment, while therapists, both human and AI, provide therapy services. They are separate and distinct services.
That said, some people choose to use both services together for a more complete and coordinated approach to their care. For example, you can work with Sophia, our AI therapist, or alternatively a human therapist to learn and practice coping skills, while a psychiatric provider manages medications to support your progress.
When you use both therapy and psychiatry services at Aluma Health, your health providers can securely view each other’s notes, helping them stay aligned on your treatment plan and goals.
How do I refer a friend or family member to Aluma Health?
You have a few options. The first option is to call Sophia, our AI Therapist, and refer your friend or family member to her. Sophia will collect the person’s name, email and mobile phone number and she will text and email the person saying that either you, or an anonymous person, depending on your desire, has referred them to talk with Sophia. If you wish, you could prepay a certain amount to cover the first one or two sessions with Sophia. This will further motivate your friend of family member to call Sophia. The text and email that Sophia sends to the person will ask the person to call Sophia, 24/7, to just have a conversation. The first conversation with Sophia is to just talk to get to know each other. Before the end of the call Sophia will ask the person if they would like to set up a free account so when they talk again, they can pick up where they left off. They can also schedule a time to talk next if the person agrees. If they schedule a time, Sophia will call the person at the scheduled time. The person can also call Sophia any time, 24/7, to work on the first exercise.
